Creating Custom WordPress Menus

I just used Screenr for the first time to create a short tutorial to show you how to create custom menus in WordPress. I hope you enjoy watching it and I plan to go through a number of my older posts, now that I know how awesome and easy Screenr is to use, and do tutorials like this whenever there is a need.

Quick Keyboard Shortcuts

computer keyboardThere are a number of keyboard shortcuts you can do to make your computing experience faster and easier. The main two that I use are Control + C to copy and Control + V to paste.

There are also characters you might sometimes want to use in your text and they can be hard to locate. For instance, where would you find the character that makes the copyright symbol without having to hunt all over? The answer in this case as well is to use a keyboard shortcut. Below are the most commonly used ones. Please try them out and see for yourself – you might even want to print them out and keep the list near your computer.

For the Degrees symbol: ALT + 0176 = °
For the Cross symbol: ALT + 0134 = †
For the Trade Mark symbol: ALT + 0153 = ™
For the Copyright symbol: ALT + 0169 = ©
For the 1/4 symbol: ALT + 0188 = ¼
For the … symbol: ALT + 0133 = …
For the cents symbol: ALT + 0162 = ¢
For the Registered symbol: ALT + 0174 = ®
For the 1/2 symbol: ALT + 0189 = ½
For the 3/4 symbol: ALT + 0190 = ¾

Any others I should add?

Creating a Free Website

dog using laptopLast week I started teaching a five session course on Creating a Free Website. Held at my local community center, in the past I’ve concentrated on how to use Blogger. I realize there are a lot of other free website possibilities, but when I’ve tried to introduce some of them – like Weebly or Webs – people have found them too confusing or didn’t like the distracting ads that came with the free version. Blogger is fairly easy to use, doesn’t have ads, and allows my students to include their own Adsense and Amazon ads with a click of a button. There is nothing like Continue reading

Keeping Firefox Tabs Open

I use Firefox as my Internet browser and one my favorite features is the ability to keep a number of tabs open, so that I can look at them again next time I use the Internet.

Why? Because when I’m reading my email, I often get links to check out. To get through my email quickly, I click the link so that it opens in Firefox and delete the email. Sometimes I end up with half a dozen or more tabs open, waiting for me to look at them. If there is video or a lot of text to get through, or a really good site that I want to re-read, I might not get to them all in one sitting. So I really liked the ability to close my Internet connection, yet have those tabs show up again next time I went online.

With the old version of Firefox it was easy. When I closed my Internet connection, I was asked if I wanted to save the tabs for next time. But Continue reading

Add a Youtube Video to an Email

Thanks to a writer at eHow (go to that link if my instructions make no sense),  I was able to add an image into an email message and have it open a video when clicked. Apparently, this method will not work with some email programs, such as gmail.

Instructions were to take a screenshot of a Youtube video and paste it into the email subject area. Normally I would use my Snagit program for that, but I was in a hurry to see if it worked, so I copied a photo from my computer and pasted it instead.

Note: to access all the email tools, you may need to check your ‘tools’ menu and make sure that HTML is chosen, rather than plain text.

The next step was to find a graphic of a ‘play’ button, download it my computer, and then ‘Insert’ the button in the middle of my image on the email. I didn’t want to take the time to do that either, so I typed the text “Click this photo” beside the picture instead. Remember, my reason for doing this was to see if it actually works, so I didn’t want to take a lot of time.

The final step was to click the image so that the icons in the toolbar would be active, then click the hyperlink icon (it’s the one that looks like a chain – if you can’t see it, you might need to maximize your email view).

That would open a dialogue box with an area to put the website address of the video. To find that address, I needed to go to the Youtube video I wanted and click the ‘Share’ button. Then, I copied the link that showed up, went back to my email program, and pasted it in the URL address box as shown in this small diagram.

Hyperlink Dialogue BoxThat’s it. When the email is sent, the recipient should be able to click the image you’ve included and the video you want to share will open. Try it and let me know if it works for you too.
