Creating a Free Website

dog using laptopLast week I started teaching a five session course on Creating a Free Website. Held at my local community center, in the past I’ve concentrated on how to use Blogger. I realize there are a lot of other free website possibilities, but when I’ve tried to introduce some of them – like Weebly or Webs – people have found them too confusing or didn’t like the distracting ads that came with the free version. Blogger is fairly easy to use, doesn’t have ads, and allows my students to include their own Adsense and Amazon ads with a click of a button. There is nothing like Continue reading

Keeping Firefox Tabs Open

I use Firefox as my Internet browser and one my favorite features is the ability to keep a number of tabs open, so that I can look at them again next time I use the Internet.

Why? Because when I’m reading my email, I often get links to check out. To get through my email quickly, I click the link so that it opens in Firefox and delete the email. Sometimes I end up with half a dozen or more tabs open, waiting for me to look at them. If there is video or a lot of text to get through, or a really good site that I want to re-read, I might not get to them all in one sitting. So I really liked the ability to close my Internet connection, yet have those tabs show up again next time I went online.

With the old version of Firefox it was easy. When I closed my Internet connection, I was asked if I wanted to save the tabs for next time. But Continue reading

Add a Youtube Video to an Email

Thanks to a writer at eHow (go to that link if my instructions make no sense),  I was able to add an image into an email message and have it open a video when clicked. Apparently, this method will not work with some email programs, such as gmail.

Instructions were to take a screenshot of a Youtube video and paste it into the email subject area. Normally I would use my Snagit program for that, but I was in a hurry to see if it worked, so I copied a photo from my computer and pasted it instead.

Note: to access all the email tools, you may need to check your ‘tools’ menu and make sure that HTML is chosen, rather than plain text.

The next step was to find a graphic of a ‘play’ button, download it my computer, and then ‘Insert’ the button in the middle of my image on the email. I didn’t want to take the time to do that either, so I typed the text “Click this photo” beside the picture instead. Remember, my reason for doing this was to see if it actually works, so I didn’t want to take a lot of time.

The final step was to click the image so that the icons in the toolbar would be active, then click the hyperlink icon (it’s the one that looks like a chain – if you can’t see it, you might need to maximize your email view).

That would open a dialogue box with an area to put the website address of the video. To find that address, I needed to go to the Youtube video I wanted and click the ‘Share’ button. Then, I copied the link that showed up, went back to my email program, and pasted it in the URL address box as shown in this small diagram.

Hyperlink Dialogue BoxThat’s it. When the email is sent, the recipient should be able to click the image you’ve included and the video you want to share will open. Try it and let me know if it works for you too.

Skype and I

computer keyboard A couple of years ago I used Skype to communicate with a marketer in Japan. At that time, I was always self-conscious about whether I was using the program correctly, could he hear me properly – in other words, I had technophobia where Skype was concerned. So I never used it again.

Last month, my daughter and I tried a Skype video chat. Feeling a little more comfortable by now, but still nervous about it. This is ridiculous, thought I, a lot of people really like Skype and I can use it to call a land-line phone from my computer, so I needed to give it a proper workout.

Well, I have to say, I ended up majorly excited about using Skype. My reason? Continue reading

Using Word 2007

A good cup of coffee When I have a coffee, I like it to taste like my usual coffee. When I use a computer program, I like it to behave the way I’m used to. Call me inflexible, but I wish that Microsoft had left Word alone. I could quickly and easily find the tools I needed in the older versions, but now I feel like a lost puppy. I’ve been helping out with a beginner Word class and it’s pretty embarrassing when I, as the instructor, can’t find the tool to Select Text :(   Nor can I easily find Print Preview.

I suppose if I had never used any other version of Word, I’d appreciate the program more. And maybe there are a lot of useful features that I haven’t discovered yet. But for now, I’m glad I can at least use the Help files. Although a little question mark icon in the corner isn’t nearly as noticeable either.

I did learn one thing though. I can go to each of the tabs, find the features that I miss, right click and add them to the short-cut bar on the Word home page. Then at least I can find some of my old helper tools.

Maybe the best thing is for me to find a book to help me wade through the changes. Any suggestions?
