For those of you who have a hosting service or ever find a need to upload a file to a server, this post is for you.
I have tried to learn and understand how to ftp a file (upload it) for a long time, with no success. Then I downloaded an ftp program called Filezilla and for some reason it finally clicked what I had to do. And it was so easy. I looked for every chance I could to upload a file just so I could use Filezilla again.
If you are using an ftp program for the first time, I’ll try to explain how I did it. At the top of the ftp program I had to insert my host address (in my case, my website address without www. or the .com, followed by .and my host’s name, including the .com). That part I had trouble with until I got the format exactly right.
Then the user name and password my hosting service gave me when I signed up (and I’m so bad about filing those forms, so it took some time to find). Then click connect. If you do all that right, you should get a message that you connected.
Then on the left side of the ftp program screen, you should see a list of the files on your computer. On the right side of the screen you should see the file folders on your server. Next, you simple drag the files you want uploaded from the computer side to the server side and in seconds you will see it uploading your files.
Once I managed to do it, I couldn’t figure out why it was so hard for me to understand before. Oh well, I’m thankful for lightbulb moments (instead of senior ones).

Another thing that needed to be done with my new computer was setting up my email. I use Outlook Express since it’s included with my system and I quickly had my email ready to go. For a couple of days I happily read my email, then I tried to send a reply. Problem - my email couldn’t be sent. So I created a new email and tried to send it. Problem again.
Then I remembered, I had this problem before. Since I use a router, I needed to change the port number for my outgoing mail (smtp) under the Advanced tab in my email properties. I changed the port number to 587 (I have Rogers Internet service, so your number may be different) and my email was sent right away.
Lest you think I am an old lady with a most amazing memory, I have to confess my secret. I write in a computer journal every time I have a problem and find the solution. It has saved my sanity many times.

I just found another reason I’m thankful to be using Firefox as my new Internet browser.
I received an email telling me to check my credit rating with Equifax. I’ve wanted to do that for awhile, so didn’t think twice about it and clicked the link to take me to the Equifax site.
Next thing I knew, Firefox showed a pop-up on my screen advising me that the site I had gone to was a possible forgery.
I do know not to click links for eBay or Paypal, but instead to type the URL in my address bar and go there directly. But I never even thought about using caution in this case. I’m getting to the point that I’m a bit paranoid about clicking links in emails at all!

I attended my first webinar on the Internet recently and found it very intimidating. I signed in and then couldn’t hear anything and the screen on the site was a static page. I had no idea what to do next!
There was a phone number to call into as well, so I took that to mean I could phone and listen, or click on the webinar link and watch and listen.
Wrong. Both things were meant to be done simultaneously. Since my phone is in the kitchen, not an easy feat. Anyway, I didn’t know that at the time, so…… I watched and watched, nothing happened, and I finally turned the computer off in disgust.
Now that I am more familiar with a webinar, I either wait a few days until the sound and powerpoint are put together on the site, or I take my laptop into the kitchen, sign in to the webinar to watch the slides, and phone the teleseminar number to listen in.
Now I know how my grandkids feel on the first day of school!

You may not think that your computer could help you find a doctor, but it sure can!
We moved to a new city and one of the first things we had to do was find a new doctor. So how do you know if the doctor is any good? The ones that people recommended were not taking new patients. Finally, I chose based on distance from my house and gender (I wanted a lady doctor).
Now, if I had gone to my computer first and checked out RateMds.com, I could have saved myself some trouble. I’d have found out that people always wait a long time to be seen, although they have appointments. That her manner is a little abrupt, and that it’s hard to get through by telephone to her office.
I’m not really complaining though. At least I didn’t choose the doctor who was a former veterinarian and had ex-patients who said he should have stuck with animals.
RateMds lists doctors, dentists and specialists, and relies on feedback from patients to get their ratings. Even if you aren’t looking for a doctor, it makes interesting reading.
