Wordpress Plugins

Posted in Software, Internet and Email, Home Computing Tips at 2:23 pm by webmaster

One reason I love using Wordpress for my blog is because of all of the great plugins that are available. Some of them are a little complicated to set up, so I haven’t tried them yet. But the majority so far are fairly simple.

There is a sticky plugin, which I use to keep certain posts always at the top of the page, a spam comment catcher which is amazing, and a podcast plugin which I hope to try soon.

These plugins can be found at various sites on the Internet and are then downloaded to your computer. The next step is usually to unzip the file and read any instructions that are included. Then the plugins need to find their way to your website file manager and into the folder marked wordpress plugins, which is usually in a folder called wp-content. Trust me, it isn’t as complicated as it sounds.

Your plug-ins can either be uploaded from your site or you can use an ftp program on your computer to send them. Once the plugins are in the plugin folder, they will show up on your wordpress Plugins tab where you click for a one time activation.

If you do a google search for wordpress plugin video tutorials and watch one, my instructions will make more sense to you.

Zipping Files

Posted in Software, Internet and Email, Home Computing Tips at 2:07 pm by webmaster

Most of you are probably familiar with unzipping files when they are either sent to you or downloaded from the Internet as a zipped file. It’s usually just a matter of clicking on the file, selecting the unzip option and you’re done.

But I had never zipped files up myself before. Why would I want to, you ask? Someone wanted me to send them a number of files, so they had to be zipped or they would be too big for my email program to handle. Besides that, a zipped file keeps confidential items safer until they reach their destination.

Using the zip program I already had, it was just a matter of creating a folder (some zip programs call it an archive) and then clicking add and selecting each file I wanted to include in the zipped material. Took all of 5 seconds or so and I was done.

Last step was to create an email and insert the zipped file as an attachment. Oh, another tip -if you are sending a private message email from a forum, you can’t attach a file there. You’ll have to send it with your regular email program.

Uploading Pictures to Wordpress

Posted in Software, Internet and Email, Home Computing Tips at 4:44 pm by webmaster

This is a Wordpress blog and a little more complicated to insert pictures. I upload the pics to my site and then to insert it, I have to type a path showing where the picture is located. The path has to be exactly right, otherwise instead of seeing my nice photo, you’ll see a small box with an x in the corner. That, my friends, means I made a mistake in the path.

This morning I tried and tried with no luck, went back to see the path I used for other images and tried again. Still no luck. Then I realized I put a / after the www instead of a dot. Once I fixed that, everything was fine.

It’s kind of like calling someone mr instead of mrs, just that one little letter difference can get you in a lot of trouble.

Free Computer Help

Posted in Internet and Email, Home Computing Tips, Sites of Interest at 4:03 pm by webmaster

Just found a site that looks like a keeper if you have computer tech issues. It’s called Geeks to Go and has a forum to ask and answer questions, how to guides, lots of info on spyware and viruses, and some well written tech reviews on everything from photo software to usb drives.

Definitely worth bookmarking for the day when you will no doubt have a computer problem (guess I should have said every day, eh - sorry, I’m a Canadian).

Filezilla

Posted in Software, Internet and Email, Home Computing Tips at 6:22 pm by webmaster

For those of you who have a hosting service or ever find a need to upload a file to a server, this post is for you.

I have tried to learn and understand how to ftp a file (upload it) for a long time, with no success. Then I downloaded an ftp program called Filezilla and for some reason it finally clicked what I had to do. And it was so easy. I looked for every chance I could to upload a file just so I could use Filezilla again.

If you are using an ftp program for the first time, I’ll try to explain how I did it. At the top of the ftp program I had to insert my host address (in my case, my website address without www. or the .com, followed by .and my host’s name, including the .com). That part I had trouble with until I got the format exactly right.

Then the user name and password my hosting service gave me when I signed up (and I’m so bad about filing those forms, so it took some time to find). Then click connect. If you do all that right, you should get a message that you connected.

Then on the left side of the ftp program screen, you should see a list of the files on your computer. On the right side of the screen you should see the file folders on your server. Next, you simple drag the files you want uploaded from the computer side to the server side and in seconds you will see it uploading your files.

Once I managed to do it, I couldn’t figure out why it was so hard for me to understand before. Oh well, I’m thankful for lightbulb moments (instead of senior ones).
