A lot of the new computers come preloaded with Microsoft Works. Other than using the word processor, I’ve never really looked at all of the templates that are included. And so many of them are for home and craft ideas.

Take a look at these templates that are listed in the Task Launcher:

caregiver instructions

chores and errands list – maybe if the list looked nicer, my hubby would act on it

grocery lists

home improvement worksheets

home inventory

instruction sheets

journals

lawn and garden worksheets

medical records

menus

moving lists

recipe books

greeting cards

certificates

address books

event flyers

party and reunion planners

wedding planners

vacation and holiday planners

vehicle logs

travel planning tools

fitness tracking

sports team records

I feel like starting at the beginning of the list and running my own little publishing business. And since this is March break and grandson might be looking for something to do, he might just be interested in helping me. Would you like to join us? We’d love to see what you create.

I have to confess that I haven’t really done much of anything with my digital photos. Some are saved on memory sticks, some are in digital photo frames, and some are saved on my computer or burned to a cd. I rarely print them off and almost never alter them in any way. My physical photos from pre-digital camera days suffer similar fates. They lie in boxes, waiting to be framed or put in albums. Not a priority, they may wait for a long time.

Not everyone is as lax as I am with their photos. Former scrappers have become dedicated to digital scrapbooking. For those of you who enjoy giving your photos the love they deserve, I’ve found a couple of websites that you may find useful. One is at Digital Scrapbooks and More and the other is a Squidoo lens called Digital Scrapbooking Freebies.

I’m sure I would really enjoy scrapbooking and I’ve promised myself I will get around to all those photos someday soon. Maybe I need a month away to work on them or something. Motivation anyone?

Thanks to our new reader, Chandra, I’ve got another website for you to check out. Filled with resources that you can print out on your computer and use for craft projects and scrapbooking, Printables is aptly named.

As you’ll notice, the site hasn’t been updated since 2005, so some of the links may be broken. But there are so many good websites mentioned that I wanted to include it anyway.

I’ve spent the last while reading one of the links, called Jacob Tyler’s Journey, about the short life of a critically ill child, told through the eyes of his mother. It’s so well written and left me in tears. If you’ve ever thought about journaling your life, you’ll want to for sure after reading this.

If you enjoy computer crafting, the people at Crafty PC have a book called “Creative Computer Crafts” that has a number of interesting crafts you can try. The book is going out of print, so it’s available right now at a very good price. If you are outside of the U.S., beware of shipping charges though. It would have cost me four times the price of the book to have it shipped. So I’ll have to get it sent to my daughter’s place in the states.

It doesn’t benefit me in any way if you purchase the book, but I do have a special reason for recommending it. You see, the Creative Home Computing site is listed as one of the useful resources. This post is my way of saying thank you.

This is an activity you can do with your child or grandchild. I think my grandson would like it if he would slow down long enough to try.

Hold a clothespin to the computer screen and trace a rectangle shape with your mouse for the butterfly body.

On each side of the body, draw and decorate a large wing. Use the copy and flip functions on your computer to make equal sides.

Then print out your butterfly, colour it, and add decorations.

Glue the uncoloured side to construction paper and cut it out.

Glue the underpart of the body to a clothespin and fold the wings up.

Glue a folded twist tie at the top of the closed end for an antennae.

Now find a nice warm place to display those butterflies.
