I have had some of my domains registered with Godaddy for years. The rest are registered with Netfirms. Until lately, I somehow overlooked the fact that Netfirms rate includes their privacy function and Godaddy doesn’t. So being the paranoid individual I am, I immediately signed up for Godaddy’s privacy option. Lo and behold it wasn’t free. And not only that, but the price for the number of domain registerations I have was a fair bit of extra money per year. (Sorry, I’m a recovering domainaholic)
I decided that when the domain names were set to expire, rather than renew, I would transfer them to Netfirms. Sounds simple, right? Not!
Godaddy sent me an email advising that I needed to accept the transfer before it would go through. If I didn’t do this within a certain amount of time, the transfer wouldn’t happen. Here’s where it started to get difficult. The email didn’t say how to accept the transfer, only how to cancel it.
With the clock ticking, I madly searched all over my Godaddy account to see how I was supposed to allow the transfer to continue. When I couldn’t find anything, I decided to beat them at their own game and pretend I was cancelling it. I followed the detailed instructions and……
I found what I was looking for. Beside the words ‘cancel this transfer’ was the phrase ‘accept the transfer’. One click and my problem was over. Now I just need to remember how I did it when the rest of the domains come up for renewal.
Sorry Godaddy, your prices are great, but I need my privacy too!

Network Solutions used to be worse, they just wouldn’t allow the transfer. Thank god for competition which finally forced them to allow transfers.
But what you had to go thorough to do a transfer borders on the insane, there is no logical reason for both to be kept in the same place. But they are one of the cheapest places to buy domains, so it might behoove you to somehow retrace(and commit to writing) the needed steps for future reference.
Ideally they would make as the default private listing known only to the domain owner and domain company.
