I mentioned the other day that I finally broke down and bought a new desktop computer with a Windows Vista operating system. I have the basic version of Vista and a fair bit of memory on the computer, so I don’t find it too slow.
But I do find it amusing that it works just like those Mac/PC commercials if you’ve seen them. Every time I do anything, including deleting a file, a message pops up asking if I authorize the action. I say yes, and another message pops up asking me if I’m sure. I suppose it is possible that someone else could have authorized the deletion and a second later I managed to take control of my computer and stopped the action. Possible, but not likely.
Like I said, so far I find it amusing. As the day goes on and it has happened more times than I can count, my amusement is fading. And I would hate to smash a brand new computer!

I finally broke down and bought a new desktop with Vista, thinking I was never going to find a new one with XP. Then, two days later, didn’t I get an email from Dell saying they were selling their computers with XP loaded until the end of this month (Feb.) Talk about annoyed, I was more than.
But I had already spent hours transferring my data and my email stuff, so I had no choice but to stick with my Vista machine. Too be fair, it hasn’t been as bad as I thought, so far.

I just found another reason I’m thankful to be using Firefox as my new Internet browser.
I received an email telling me to check my credit rating with Equifax. I’ve wanted to do that for awhile, so didn’t think twice about it and clicked the link to take me to the Equifax site.
Next thing I knew, Firefox showed a pop-up on my screen advising me that the site I had gone to was a possible forgery.
I do know not to click links for eBay or Paypal, but instead to type the URL in my address bar and go there directly. But I never even thought about using caution in this case. I’m getting to the point that I’m a bit paranoid about clicking links in emails at all!

If you have always wanted to write a book, why not start with an ebook? Everyone is an expert at something and other people would love to know what you have to say.
To get you started, try the following:
- make a list of all the things you know, or have experienced (even health problems can be an area of expertise and you can help others who may have the same concerns).
- choose the topic you feel most passionate about to start with
- decide on a time of day and force yourself to write for at least 5 minutes (I find that whenever I have something I don’t want to do, I make myself for just 5 minutes and usually find I can work longer than that).
- divide your topic into 10 to 12 chapters, with 4 sub-headings per chapter (this isn’t written in stone, just a guideline).
- make it your goal to write at least a chapter per day if you can.
If you can’t think of chapters, try listing all of the things you know about your topic. You should then be able to see some common subject areas.
More tips to come and let me know how you are making out with your project.

If you are a mac computer user, I have a good image sharing program for you to check out.
You can snap a picture of a website, capture a chat moment, take a screenshot of an application, quickly sketch an idea, even add notes with arrows and circles to point out specific things.
You can find out more at skitch.com. I have not personally used this program although I was all ready to get it until I found out I needed a mac. If anyone knows of a program this good for the pc, let me know. (I am saying it’s a good program because of things I’ve heard from other people, so thought I’d pass it on.)
