Most Computer fans run all the time. You best bet since it is laptop and not easy to work on would be to take it to PC repair shop or if you have any left exercise your warranty options.

I had the same problem with my old Toshiba laptop. I did some research and found it was pretty common. Bought myself one of those fan bases that you put your laptop on, but it didn't make much difference. I think the newer laptops have less problems with overheating.

I'm not a techie, but if the laptop is really hot, the fan should probably be running all the time. Sorry, I can't tell you if the fan needs replacing. Maybe someone else in our community has an answer. Anyone?

On starting my hp 530 laptop, the fan turns on and runs for few seconds and thereafter turns off . It runs intermittently and stops. Laptop overheats and shut down abruptly. Recently started facing the problem. Should the fan run constantly? If so, does it mean the laptop fan needs replacement. Advice please

Have you tried doing a search for "overheating laptop" on google? Did the shutting down start after adding some program?
Have you tried backing up anything and everything you want to save and doing a "clean install" which Windows likes to call "raw" and involves doing a complete format and re installation of WinXP when that completes.

Possibly your BIOS displays Temperatures.Which should either confirm or deny any possible overheating. If none of the previous provides a solution, a trip to a computer repair shop is your next option. Is it still under warranty?
